    When chefs Chris and Laura Zapalowski purchased Homewood Gourmet from original owner Franklin Biggs, they knew they had big shoes to fill. A Homewood institution for nearly 15 years, the eatery serves made-from-scratch sandwiches, salads, soups and sweets made with local ingredients. The Zapalowskis have a solid culinary pedigree — both worked for Emeril Lagasse and Birmingham's Chris Hastings. While they made a few changes, the pair has kept many of Biggs' signature dishes the same.
